1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL

55 years later and the Pagoda still has style.

The year was 1963. Once again the automotive world was set ablaze with a completely new design of the SL series. Affectionately known as the Pagoda due to the shape of the body with the Hardtop installed. There is a vague reference to Asian architecture. But under the beautiful shape was one of the 1st sports cars ever to incorporate safety crush zones in the event of a collision. Engineer Béla Barényi showed off his beautiful creation at the Geneva Auto Show and the transformation of the SL began. Starting with the 2.3 liter 6 cylinder with a fantastic Bosch Mechanical Fuel Injection the model 113 was a big leap in performance over the 190 4 cylinder predecessor that sported carburetors. The engine displacement was upped to 2.5 liters with the 250 SL and finally ended at a very good performing 2.8 liter engine from 1968 to the last year of the 113 production in 1971. During the 8 year production cycle, the Pagoda gained the reputation of being a wonderfully reliable automobile that drove comfortably but with a sporting attitude.

Looking back at our history here at Motorcar Gallery, our 1st Pagoada was sold in our 2nd year: 1986. Today we are proud to present the 1st Horizon Blue 280 SL ever in our inventory. It arrived from Arizona after nearly 5 years of great care from a true enthusiast who proudly showed this example at numerous car events around the Scottsdale area. Examining the history shows that this beauty spent the majority of its life here in Florida. In fact the interim owner from the original lady owner to our new friend in Scottsdale stopped by for a look. He was impressed at the fantastic condition and was happy to see that it is ready for the next person to enjoy. Service records show that there is nothing needed to make this a perfect addition to either an established collection or as the impetus to a future collection. This is also an automobile that you could drive comfortably every day.
