It was the Swinging 60s when the VW Bug really took off. Even though it was a design from the 1930s, the Bug sales jumped at that time due to affordability and great fuel mileage. But something else happened. The Bug had a cult following that made it the most successful import car in the history of the US car business. With this success came the VW Bus, also known as the Type 2.

Many people today think that Chrysler debuted the Mini-Van but this is not true. The VW Bus was really the 1st popular Mini-Van. As the popularity of the Bus grew, VW began offering different variations such as a Pick-Up, Panel Van, and most popular, the Camper. VW had all camper conversions performed by an outside company called Westfalia. This German company was made famous by the VW conversions. These were very elaborate conversions that included all the basics needed for camping. Westfalia was incredibly ingenious in getting all the necessities into a very small space. But once you raise the roof, it felt much more spacious.

This example built in 1976 comes to us from a collector of a wide variety of cars. It was the goal to take the Kids camping but when you have teenage girls, that turned out to be a no-go. Aside from the great condition of this "Type 2:" is the power plant. The original 69 horsepower 4 cylinder motor has been replaced by a Scat Performance 2.6 liter flat 4 cylinder long block. This is the pinnacle of replacement engines for VW. This example has been professionally built (the records show) with dual Weber Carburetors and a new free-flow exhaust system from California Pacific/JBugs. This is only the beginning of all the mechanical maintenance and upgrades. Records also show brake upgrade and clutch replacement. In other words, it is ready for the Great Outdoors.
